RULES I NOW LIVE BY

So sorry for not making a blog post since November 13th.   Excuses aside it has been an incredible journey over the last four weeks.   Actually it has been an incredible experience since I attended my first design school class starting August 31, 2010.

I first want to say thank you to everyone for their constant words of encouragement.  Your belief in me, your kinds words and comments on my blog and facebook page have really meant a lot.  In times when I wondered if I could handle the tasks at hand I found that having a support system of friends some I have known for what seems like infinity...and some I have actually never met in person became a constant source of encouragement for me.   My entire family and of course my incredible husband offered so many moments of sanity, grace and love that I feel so blessed.   I know I am sounding mushy but I really don't think I could have made it through this first semester without having a foundation of friends and family that really cared about my journey.

On December 9th at 4:00 p.m. I walked with a group of my new friends from the Arts and Sciences building.  I had my art tote on one shoulder, lap top on the other and I was pulling my rolling case.   I stopped and looked up at the incredibly beautiful and brightly colored clouded sky to quietly offer thanks.  The group I was with also stopped to look at each other and we all smiled.  Some of us had hugged earlier and made a plan to go out next week to celebrate.   One of our instructors saw the group of us and walked up to offer us his home made ginger cookies and to tell us how proud he was of us.  He said he felt this semester was one of the heaviest work loads given to students that he can remember and he congratulated us in surviving and not just surviving but doing great work!!!  We all spoke for a few more minutes and then each went our separate ways.  Most of us were working on only a few hours sleep and getting some rest was first and foremost on our mind.  When I got home I felt relief, calm, and a sense of accomplishment.  I actually don't remember feeling like that in a very long time.

It had been a very intense time since Thanksgiving.  Luckily for Thanksgiving I did have time to decorate my Thanksgiving Table and went with a bold color scheme of Purple, gold and red.  It was a big hit.  It seems like Thanksgiving was ages ago rather than just a few weeks ago.

Right after Thanksgiving on November 27 to be exact I began working on my final projects.  I don't think I went to bed any sooner than 2 a.m. and there were times it was as late as 3:30 a.m. but I was always back up and at it at 8 a.m.  I have been known to be a bit intense when working on something and well truth be told......I was more than a bit intense.  Seriously thank god for my husband because I am one of those types of people that if I am in the middle of something I get so absorbed I am not aware of what is happening around me.  I wish I could be different and I wish that I didn't get "possessed"  because it isn't always very becoming.  There were several moments when I am sure my husband thought Linda Blair had taken over my body.  In fact one morning on the way to school I had to text my husband and remind him to not lose hope that his wife would soon be back.

Mrs. Linda Blair

After Thanksgiving I moved my work station that had been in the living room into the kitchen eating area.   As I now look around I realize I not only took over the kitchen area, dining room and parts of the living room...but a small round table I had moved into the entry way for Thanksgiving was still covered in rolls of completed drafting projects.  There were bits of paper scraps on the floor under my work space, rubber cement covered my work table and lets just say I think I should autograph my work space stable because it looks like a very interesting piece of abstract art.  (I wish) It is a good thing I can cover it with a table cloth because I definitely left my mark on this table in the form of paint, glue, cuts from my exacto blades mixed with a few bits of late night chocolate, coffee, and probably some wine and tequila too!!

As I worked I tried to remain focused on one project at a time but found that I needed to take a break from one project and work on another one just to keep sane.  Oh...and about those projects I probably should explain them to you.    I had to complete three projects.
1. Drafting:  I had to finish correcting all the red lines of a residential home that I had previously turned in and still had to complete a finish schedule and elevations, a title page which included a logo and then have it copied and bound.
2. Color Theory: I was building a model of a commercial interior and an abstract materials board which represented the space in abstract.  The model needed to represent your concept and color theory and you had to SELL it in your oral presentation.
3. Graphic Techniques:  I had to do a furniture plan and use shading, texture, and value techniques in gray scale markers and pencils.  I also had to render a room in two point perspective.  All of the furnishings had to be actual furnishings and I had to supply tear sheets to verify size and scale.  I also had to do a conceptual sketch to further represent my concept.  This was to be mounted on mat boards and then I needed to do an oral presentation and SELL it to my imaginary clients.

At the moment I don't have pictures as they have all be submitted for grading....but I am proud of the work.  I will share some pics when I get them back.   But it was seriously an incredible amount of work that needed to be completed in a very short amount of time.   I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to finish them.  But I kept telling myself that I hadn't come all this way to whimper to the finish line.  That isn't who I am and what the heck I could sleep all I wanted once this was all over.  So I trudged on...and on....and on.  And I finished....and once I finished and made my way home I slept and slept and slept.

And then I woke, drank lots of coffee, ate lots of food,  had a cocktail or two.....and reflected.

I reflected on all the lessons I have learned over the past 100 days and thought I should share with you rules I now live by:

  1.   Follow your dream.  It is never to late.  I am doing it...you can too!!
  2.   Don't Procrastinate. Just don't.
  3.   Listen....Listen...Listen.
  4.   Ask lots of questions.
  5.   Instructions are for reading.
  6.   Measure twice, three times and maybe four.  Cut once or as many times as it takes.
  7.   Always be prepared.  Those days of being a girl scout are still coming in handy.
  8.   When in doubt glue, glue and then glue again.
  9.   Become an expert in all types of glue.
  10.   Love all of your fingers and quickly learn how to use an exacto knife.
  11.   Rubber cement eats acrylic nails.
  12.   Learn to love Rubber Cement.
  13.   Figure out who is the smartest, and most talented person in the class.
  14.   Become best friends with that person.
  15.   Sit in the same seat all semester long.
  16.   Wear bright colors.  I found that my favorite color of Pistachio green was very helpful.
  17.   Become a detective and figure out what the teachers like.
  18.   Meet with your teacher often.
  19.   Learn how to read an Architectural scale.
  20.   Sketch, Sketch and Sketch.
  21.   Draft until that is all you can dream about.
  22.   Know the difference between analogous, monochromatic, tetrad, triad, and complementary.
  23.   Forget about wine until the drafting is done.
  24.   Forget about coffee until the drafting is done.
  25.   Understand how big an inch on a 1/4 inch scale is.
  26.   Make friends at San Jose Blue Print.
  27.   Make friends at Michaels.
  28.   Make friends at University Art.
  29.   Buy twice as much of everything you think you need.
  30.   If creativity has hit a brick wall get up, take a deep breath and check your facebook page.
  31.   Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply.  Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.
  32.   Laugh until you cry.
and last but not least........

33. DON'T SWEAT THE LITTLE THINGS.

I have finals starting tomorrow and in comparison to the final projects they are very insignificant.   I am officially done with school at noon on Wednesday December 15.....and I am already thinking and getting excited about next semester.

But what really has me excited is CHRISTMAS.  I am crazy mad about Christmas and I finished decorating the tree and the living room yesterday.  Tonight I am working on the family room and then onto the bedrooms.    Sometimes less is more.......but NEVER EVER EVER does that apply to Christmas decorations.....and certainly not in my world.

For inspiration here are some links to some of my favorite blogs and their love for Christmas:

Almost there......

Sorry for being MIA.   It has been a very busy few weeks and there appears to be no letting up.  The good news is there is only five weeks left in  the semester.  I have learned so many new skills in this short time. Here is an update of what I have completed.

1. Drafting:  I have drafted a commercial space including a reflected ceiling plan, elevations, finish plan and a construction plan.  Up next is a two story residential house.....Yep.  I just created the base plans which will be used to draft the rest of the project.  Unlike the commercial space which was hand drafted four separate times.   Seriously...I have memorized the measurements of that entire space....and hope I stop dreaming about it soon!!!!

3. Graphic Techniques:  I have rendered several different interior spaces including a master bedroom and a living room. .  I have rendered in two point perspective.  I did a floor plan and landscaping.

2. Color Theory:  I have made a color wheel, Chroma and Value Charts. I have also built two models out of foam core.....oh yeah..that was interesting.  The good thing is I still have all my fingers.  Wowzer.....if you have never worked with foam core it is difficult and requires the use of different types of exacto blades to get different shapes.  Of course you learn very quickly that envisioning a design and executing one are two different things.  Hmmm......they could of just told me that....but lesson learned.

"A Giggle"

In the works are the following projects:  A two story residential plan.  I am currently in the midst of drafting the plan.  I just finished another model for color theory and still have my final project which is designing a color scheme for a residential interior.  In Graphic Techniques I am in the midst of rendering a chair in water color.  I have to create the chair in Google sketchup and then hand draw it in 2 point perspective and render it based on a fabric of my choosing.  Also there is a final project yet to be assigned. Hummmm.......DEEP BREATH!!!

Thanksgiving is in two weeks and I can't wait.  I have a huge Thanksgiving planned.  Of course  since there is only five weeks left in school I also have several HUGE projects due right after Thanksgiving.  The timing sucks but soon after I will be on a LONG winter break.  I desperately need it.

Oh and about Thanksgiving......I always look forward to creating a table scape for Thanksgiving and in my spare time I have been envisioning  a bold color scheme.  I have red leather dining rooms chairs and I am thinking Cobalt Blue, Red and Gold......add some amazing wine....and a meal cooked by Chef Jeff (my adorable Husband) that will include Two turkeys, A Prime Rib and side dishes galore.....a few desserts and presto!!!!!!  A Thanksgiving to remember.  I saw this picture of a table scape designed by Eddie Ross in the Lonny Magazine....it is certainly good inspiration.

Or this one from Between Naps on the porch:

If you are looking for Tablescape ideas be sure to check out Between the Naps on the Porch and Eddie Ross......both are passionate about Tablescapes.....(like me).

Well I am not sure I will be back before Thanksgiving so I just want to say......Gobble Gobble!!!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

A FEW GHOSTLY ENCOUNTERS

An orb that appeared near a lower back window ...
The Whaley House  San Diego, Ca

Halloween is around the corner.  It is absolutely my most favorite holiday next to Christmas of course.  I love all the decorating.  I also love the thought of  a haunted house and ghosts and goblins.  I even like a little scare factor.  Whenever my family and I go on vacation we make it a point to check out the supernatural history in the area.  We have gone to Murphys, Boston, San Diego, Salem, Charleston, Savannah and many other places and made it a point to visit sites where hauntings have been reported.  This includes hotels, houses, public places, and yes a few cemetery's as well.    I have also been fortunate enough to live in a few houses that have been known to have a few ghostly visitors.  No way you say.....Oh yes...and I have friends that have lived to tell about it.   I have never really been scared....well maybe a little.

Cemetery in Boston....check out those orbs.

Probably the scariest place we have visited was The Whaley House in San Diego.  It really doesn't look that scary.  But there were some definite unexplained events....one that sent a perfectly logical and reasonable young girl who happens to be my daughter running out of a room.

Whaley House Museum, Old Town, San Diego, Cali...
The Whaley House  San Diego, California

It looks like a perfectly innocuous place.  But I know a few people who personally that couldn't disagree more.   It has been investigated by numerous "Ghost Hunters" and a few celebrity's along the way including Rod Serling, Vincent Price and even Regis Philbin.  It is also  registered with the US Dept of Commerce as a Haunted House.  The only other Haunted House registered with the US Dept of Commerce is the Winchester Mystery House right here in San Jose, California.

You can check out more about the Whaley House here:  http://www.whaleyhouse.org/ghostly.htm

Old Cemetery's of course remain an all time favorite stop.  Boston, Savannah and Murphys have some very important ones from a Historical factor and also from a Haunted perspective.  Here are some my favorite photos of some of our cemetery visits.

Cemetery in Boston........and they locked us into the Cemetery at dusk.....YEP IT WAS FUN!!

That same cemetery at dusk in Boston

Cemetery in Savannah.....the Spanish Moss adds just a little bit of the scary factor.

Of course to mix things up (because  just visiting cemetery's on our vacation would be a little weird...right?)  here is a picture of the City jail in Charleston, SC.  My husband and I went on a late night ghost tour.  The jail was in operation from 1802 through 1920.....and yes it was a little creepy and a lot SCARY!!!

So that is my little Halloween tour.....and hasn't it been fun!!!!

I have been working hard at school and the projects are coming in faster and faster.....and certain days I do feel like my friend below.......but at the end of the day it is nothing a little Oil of Olay and a Tequila Gimlet can't help cure.....and not necessarily in that order.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Reminiscing about Savannah and Charleston

River Walk in Savannah

Fall......there is just something about this season that makes me a little melancholy.  The crisp air.  The crunch of the leaves.  The brilliant colors.  The realization that another year is coming to an end.   My favorite holiday is fast approaching.  I  feel like an excited little kid with many ideas running through my head from decorating my house to hunting for the best pumpkin.  Then with Thanksgiving fast approaching I am thinking of a new  tablescape for my dining room table and of course the ultimate....my Christmas tree.   And of course once Christmas is here I will have one semester of design school under my belt.  Woo Hoo!!

Last year at this time my husband and I were in Savannah and Charleston.  I am in love with the south and all things southern.  Since I can't get back there this year I thought I would take a mental vacation in between drafting and many other projects whose due dates are fast approaching.   Here are some pictures of my most favorite places in Charleston and Savannah.

Scary Ghost Tour....check out those orbs.

My next house...  well not really.  But I wouldn't mind staying there.

I really wanted to knock on the door of this house.  In my mind I thought how cool would it be to knock on that door and be invited in for some ice cold sweet tea.

Well that was my little mental vacation.  I hope you enjoyed it too!!  I need to get back to  my school work.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Show and Tell.....Before and After

This was the remodel project that convinced me to follow my dream of becoming an interior designer.  I had a vision the day I saw this house.  I drove past it and saw a for sale sign and immediately drove home and to get my husband.  He was also convinced and we closed escrow in 30 days.  We both had full time time jobs.  But we knew we could make this house something amazing.  We had a plan.  I would be the designer and he would be the project manager.  I am not sure he knew what he was getting into.   I had a clear idea of what I wanted create.  He had a clear idea of the finances.   Together we were going to spend the next three years living in the midst of this remodel.  We lived to tell about it.  We are still married.  He is not so sure about being my project manager ever again.  But for me....I can't wait to do this again and better yet to be hired by someone and get paid to do something I love!!

So I hope you enjoy my little journey of day's gone past.   Fall makes me a little melancholy but in a thankful way.  I have so many things to be thankful for.  So thank you for reading my blog and sharing your comments.   Enjoy!!

The day I walked into this house I immediately envisioned this space completely different.  I even had a solution for that unfortunate fireplace.   This remodel was a true test of patience, understanding and love.

LOVE OF THE DESIGN PROCESS.

I look back at this project now and I am proud.   I see things that I would probably have done differently.  But I think every good designer will look back on a project and want to tweak something.   I am learning it is part of the process.

So this was my little mental vacation.   I squeezed this little post in between major projects that are due in drafting, color theory and graphic techniques.  So I am back to the drawing table.....literally!!    I need to get back to work honing my skills.  I know that I will come across another remodel project.  Now instead of using hand jive and stick drawings I will be able to hand a contractor a set of plans and maybe only make two trips to Benjamin Moore instead and twenty.   And instead of describing to someone my vision I will be able to render it.
