Circles, Squares and Triangles....Oh my!!

Hip 2 be Triangle Square Circle

Things are starting to get busy.  I am hitting week two with a bit more stride and learning to use design language when talking about design.  I thought I would share with you what classes I am taking and kind of give you a general idea what the classes are about and what I am expected to learn.  As I stated previously I am taking four studio classes.   They are:  Graphic Techniques, Color Theory, Elements and Principals, and Interior Architectural Drafting.

Graphic Techniques:
This class covers sketching and rendering techniques of interior spaces.  It will involve one point and two point perspective and sketching and rendering techniques in black and white with an introduction to color media.  We do an in class sketch each class period.   "We are designers not artists" is what our instructor says often.  I have never taken an art class so it is helpful to remember that quote.  I am very critical of my drawings and I am learning several techniques to improve.

Here is one of my first drawings: These drawings are called contour drawings.  No shading is allowed.  You can only use lines to render your image.  Notice that the Tequila bottle and lime are still in tact......I think this weekend there is going to be one little Tequila Gimlet in my future.  Well maybe two.

My Goal is to be able to render like the above rendering.

Color Theory:
This course is an introduction to design fundamentals and the use of the basic principles of color in relation to interior design. Through a series of lectures and studio projects I will acquire knowledge of color theory and be able to implement "Good" color design in interior spaces.  I absolutely love color and am so excited to use my paints.  Woo Hoo!!!

I have already completed one assignment and two are currently in the works. The good use and bad use of color was the topic of the first assignment.   Although color is such a personal thing......have you ever had a vision of a color and then painted a room in what you thought was that same paint color and then promptly went and found a wall on which to bang your head.  Next time that happens feel free to use the below kit.

As I learn more about color and the things to take into consideration when you pick color....like lighting.....mood....room use etc. I will give your some pointers so you won't be beating your head against a wall like I have done on numerous occasions.

Elements and Principals:
My last blog really derived from the class.  This course is intended to provide students with the knowledge of abstract and conceptual design elements and principles, which will be applied to designing interior spaces in subsequent interior design courses and in professional work.

Ok so this sounds easy right.  Well we just got the first assignment and it has me dreaming in circles, triangles, squares, dots, lines and planes.   This has been very surreal and definitely reminiscent of those psychedelic posters from the 1970's that hung on my bedroom walls.

Interior Architectural Drafting:
This course introduces the tools and techniques necessary for drafting interior spaces. Emphasis is on line work, lettering, measuring techniques, scale problems, use of architectural and interior graphic standards, dimensioning, plans, elevations, sections, details, and para line drawings.  I will be drafting a commercial space and a residential space and submitting them as a usable set of plans.  This is going to be one tough class.

I think a quick visit to an eye doctor is going to be necessary.

I will spare you an example of this weeks work.  Let me just say that it was not pretty and my fingers and hands are crimped, stiff and grumpy!!

So on that note.......there is a Tequila Gimlet calling my name.....very LOUDLY.
